Şemmamê is one of the most widely known songs of the Kurdish folk repertoire, named after the small fragrant melon that gives the beloved her pet name. It has been sung in countless versions, from village circles to studio recordings by the great modern voices, and remains a fixture at weddings and gatherings. Like much of the anonymous folk repertoire its exact origins cannot be dated; its melody and refrain, however, are recognized instantly across all parts of Kurdistan. Worldwide search interest in the song is higher than for almost any other single Kurdish folk title.
