Meyro is a folk song addressed to a woman whose name has become inseparable from the modern history of Kurdish music: Koma Amed’s choral arrangement made it the defining recording of the 1990s koma wave, the version through which a whole urban generation met the song. Behind that famous arrangement stands the older village song, direct and teasing, that regional singers had carried for generations.
