Keçê Kurdan (Girls of the Kurds), released by Aynur in 2004, became an anthem for Kurdish women: a song that tells girls to step forward, and made its singer internationally famous. It faced censorship attempts precisely because of that power. Two decades later it is still the most searched Kurdish-language song title in several European countries, and lyric searches remain constant. The song marks the point where the female voice moved from carrying the tradition to leading it. As a modern, protected work, its full text is not reproduced here.
